BMW i introduced a special i8 hybrid sportscar at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Black Edition is based on a matte lacquer, which in everyday life is often even more impressive than on high-gloss polished cars – and which in the case of the wing door is even more special, because the elements of the Black Belt as with all other i8 are still in glossy black. The i8-typical accents in Frozen Gray are also reserved.
This gives the BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Black Edition a bicolor look of shiny and matte black which, in combination with the aerodynamically designed and unchanged futuristic-looking forms, will surely attract many curious looks. The fact that the wing-door in Geneva was a little shaded by the Garage Italia i8 CrossFade is unlikely to play a role in everyday life – after all, the blue-gray product is only sold 20 times worldwide.
Although the BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Black Edition is limited, instead of the number of units, the production period provides for a more theoretical limitation. The production will kick off in April 2017.
Inside the BMW i8 Protonic Frozen features exclusive lettering paired with dark NESO seats with woven yellow and anthracite stitching and the headrest with the embossed BMW i8 logo. A strikingly attractive contrast is created by the seat belt in grey.
The model presented in Geneva is based on the 20-inch light-alloy wheels W-spoke 470, carries the laser light headlights and the powertrain known since summer 2014: front electric motor, three-cylinder petrol in the rear. Together they bring the two power sources to 362 hp, which is sufficient for a sprint time of 4.4 seconds from the stand to 100 as well as a top speed of 250 km/h. With a 37-kilometer electrical range, it is also possible to push the EU standard consumption to 2.1 liters per 100 kilometers.
